Jesus Christ is the Head of this church, and His Word serves as the standard by which we conduct ourselves and by which leaders are chosen and how they operate. Our “under-shepherds” lead by serving, caring for, guiding, and loving the church. Their lives must be marked by godly character and humble submission to the Lord Jesus Christ. They are tested and affirmed by the congregation–accountable to the Lord, to each other, and to the church.
We practice plurality leadership and follow an Elder-led, Congregational form of governance. Simply put, that means that a group of men who are called by God and affirmed by the congregation serve as elders (lay and staff) who provide spiritual leadership to the church with the support of a group of deacons. Meanwhile, the church’s members are still actively involved in the decisions that guide the work of the church’s ministry and operations.
Pastor Matt Tarr
Matt considers himself blessed to have been raised in a godly Christian home where he submitted his life to Christ at a young age, though it was not until entering college at Liberty University that he realized the Lord was calling him into full-time pastoral ministry. After marrying his wife Melody in 2009, Matt served as a chaplain at the Scranton Rescue Mission until enrolling at The Master’s Seminary to pursue his M.Div. degree. During that time, he also served in various capacities on staff at Grace Community Church, most recently as an administrative assistant in the Pastoral Counseling Department and Men’s Ministries. Then, in 2014, he graduated from the Grace Advance Academy before being affirmed by the congregation of High Point Baptist Church as our pastor of preaching-teaching.
Matt has passion for accurately handling the Word of God, discipleship, evangelism, and encouraging others to honor Christ by their Christian living. In 2012, the Lord blessed Matt and Melody with their first son, Jonathan. Their second son, Timothy, was born in October 2014.
Tom has been a member of High Point Baptist Church for over six years. He has served in various roles as a member of the Stewardship Team, as a deacon, and as a Youth Ministry leader since joining the church. God has blessed him with a wonderful wife, Laurie, and six children. Tom currently teaches High School Physics at a local Pennsylvania school.
After graduating from Baptist Bible Seminary–M.Div. (’85) and Th.M (’88)–, Greg taught high school English for several years. During that time, he also finished three courses in the Seminary’s Doctor of Ministry program. In 2005 Greg completed the English literature program at the University of Scranton. Since 2006, he has been facilitating composition, literature, and communications courses at the University of Phoenix (online). He has served in leadership roles at High Point Baptist Church since 2013, and has been an active member for more than two decades.
